NASHVILLE, Tenn. — Fox 17 Nashville reported shocking news concerning the frequency daycare centers to continue to use inclined sleepers. According to Fox 17 Nashville’s report, one out of every ten daycare service providers still use inclined sleepers. The non-profit children’s advocacy group “Kids in Danger” and the U.S. Public Interest Research Group performed the survey and reported those results. Inclined sleepers have contributed to at least 36 infant’s deaths. The number could be much higher. Some estimates assert the number of children who died while in inclined sleepers is well over 50. Fisher-Price and several other children’s goods manufacturers have recalled their inclined sleepers because of the potential lethality of the product.
The study undertaken by Kids in Danger and the U.S. Public Interest Research Group that examined the frequency with which daycare centers continue to use inclined sleepers began after someone associated with the Public Interest Research Group informed the agency that a daycare facility in Philadelphia continued using inclined sleepers subject to the massive recall. Their manufacturers recalled approximately 5 million inclined sleepers with the aid of the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission. Fisher-Price and Kids Two lead the recall effort. Fisher-Price recalled its popular Rock-N-Play sleeper and Kids Two recalled its inclined sleeper known as the Rocking Sleeper during the recall campaign.
The Consumer Product Safety Commission recalled the inclined sleepers after it determined why so many infants died while using inclined sleepers. The Commission believes that children rolled over while laying on their backs to their stomachs or sides. The babies suffocated after they were able to roll over but not back. All of the babies who died were not restrained.
Kids in Danger and the Public Interest Research Group think more should be done to inform the public about the inherent danger of inclined sleepers and the recall initiatives. Companies who manufacture inclined sleepers, the advocacy groups said, should work harder to inform the public instead of announcing a recall without more.
